Hornady Critical Defense .380 ACP is the ammo line engineered from the ground up specifically for short-barrel concealed-carry pistols. Most defensive ammo was designed for full-size 9mm and tested in 4"+ barrels — when you fire the same load through a 2.75" Ruger LCP or 2.7" Glock 42, you don't get the same terminal performance. Critical Defense solves that with the Flex Tip eXpanding (FTX) bullet, tuned velocity, and a propellant blend matched to short barrels.
The FTX bullet's signature feature is the polymer Flex Tip embedded in the hollow point cavity — when the round encounters heavy clothing (denim, jackets, hoodies), the polymer plug forces the hollow point to expand instead of clogging shut like older designs. Nickel-plated cases give you smoother feeding from tight magazines and visible chamber checks. Low-flash propellant reduces the muzzle flare that would otherwise wreck your night vision.

Critical Defense .380 ACP is designed for the popular compact .380 carry pistols including the Ruger LCP / LCP Max / LCP II, S&W Bodyguard .380 / M&P 380 Shield EZ, Glock 42, SIG Sauer P238 / P232, Walther PPK/S, Bersa Thunder, and similar short-barrel .380s.
.380 ACP delivers about half the muzzle energy of 9mm Luger. Critical Defense's FTX design partially closes this gap by making sure the bullet actually expands at .380 velocities — but if you can shoot 9mm comfortably, you'll get better terminal performance. The Critical Defense .380 makes the .380 platform meaningfully better than ball ammo for those who carry a .380 for comfort or concealability.
Yes — fire at least 50 rounds through your specific pistol before relying on it for carry. Every .380 pistol has a slightly different feed profile, and confirming reliability with your specific gun is non-negotiable for defensive ammo. Many shooters do 100+ rounds before staging Critical Defense for carry.
Properly stored (cool, dry, no temperature extremes), modern centerfire ammunition stays reliable for decades. Many shooters report flawless ignition with ammo 30+ years old. For carry, we recommend rotating your magazine every 6-12 months and inspecting for chamber rub or corrosion.
