Part 1: Rifle Reflex Sights (AR-15, AR-10, Carbine)

Rifle-sized open reflex sights are what most people picture when they hear "red dot." Larger window, picatinny base, designed to co-witness with iron sights. The Holosun rifle lineup is dominated by two models — the HS510C and the ARO Enclosed series.

HS510C — The Workhorse

The Holosun HS510C is the rifle red dot that earned Holosun its reputation. Open reflex design with a 65 MOA outer circle plus a 2 MOA center dot, 50,000-hour battery life on a single CR2032, solar failsafe (the optic continues to function on solar power if the battery dies), and a Shake Awake feature that wakes the dot when motion is detected.

The combination of circle-dot reticle is the killer feature: the 65 MOA outer circle catches your eye for close-range and rapid target acquisition, while the 2 MOA center dot gives you precise hits out to 200 yards. HS510C + HM3X Magnifier Combo — The Best-Seller

For shooters who want close-range red dot speed AND mid-range magnified precision, the HS510C + HM3X 3x Magnifier Combo bundles the HS510C with Holosun's flip-to-side 3x magnifier. Same circle-dot reticle, but with a magnifier you can flip behind the dot for 100-300 yard target ID, then flip aside for CQB-style shooting.

ARO Enclosed — For Adverse Conditions

The Holosun ARO Enclosed Green Multi-Reticle Rifle Sight is the closed-emitter option. The fully-enclosed housing keeps mud, snow, blood, and rain out of the emitter — critical for duty/patrol use where the rifle is exposed to weather and field conditions. Green reticle for shooters who find green easier to see in daylight (red on red backgrounds can wash out; green stays visible against earth tones and orange targets).

Part 2: Pistol Red Dots — Footprint Demystified

Pistol red dots come in two main footprints that aren't interchangeable. Buy the wrong footprint and your optic literally won't bolt to your slide. Here's the breakdown.

RMR Footprint — For Glock MOS, P320 X-Series, and Most Optic-Ready Pistols

The Trijicon RMR footprint is the de facto standard for full-size and compact optic-ready pistols. If you have a Glock 17/19/45 MOS, a SIG P320 X-Carry / X-Five, an FN 509 Tactical, or any factory optic-ready full-size 9mm — you almost certainly have an RMR footprint.

• Holosun HE407C-GR X2 — 2 MOA green dot, Solar Failsafe, Shake Awake, RMR footprint. The most popular full-size pistol red dot in our lineup. Green dot for daylight visibility, $300-350 price point. Bolts directly to Glock MOS plates and most factory RMR cuts.
• Holosun HS507COMP Competition Red Dot — competition-tuned reticle (ACSS Vulcan MRS — a 6 MOA dot with a chevron and ranging marks), RMR footprint, taller housing for fast acquisition. Built for IDPA / USPSA shooters who need ranging at speed.

Shield RMSc Footprint — For P365, Hellcat, and Most Micro-Compact Pistols

The Shield RMSc footprint is smaller and used on micro-compact pistols where space matters: SIG P365 / P365XL, Springfield Hellcat, Smith & Wesson Shield Plus, Glock 43X/48 (with aftermarket slide), and similar concealed-carry-sized pistols.

• Holosun HE507K-GR X2 — 2 MOA green dot in a Shield RMSc footprint. Same Solar Failsafe + Shake Awake feature set as the HE407C, sized for micro-compact slides. This is the optic for a P365.
• Holosun HS407K X2 — Same Shield RMSc footprint, red dot version. Slightly less expensive than the green-dot HE507K. Pick this if you prefer red and want to save $30-40.

Part 3: Reticle Choice — Red vs. Green, Dot vs. Circle-Dot

Red vs. Green

Both work. The difference is subtle but meaningful:

• Red — the traditional choice. More energy-efficient (longer battery life), and most shooters' brains are conditioned to see red as a "target indicator." Slightly harder to see against red backgrounds (a person in a red shirt, a brick wall, an orange target).
• Green — easier for most human eyes to see in daylight (green is at the peak of human eye sensitivity). Stays visible against more background colors. Slightly shorter battery life than red. Costs $30-40 more.

Our recommendation: if you primarily shoot indoor ranges or low-light, red is fine. If you shoot outdoors in bright daylight, the green dot upgrade is worth it.

Dot vs. Circle-Dot

This is about target acquisition speed vs. precision:

• Single dot (2 MOA) — most precise. The 2 MOA dot covers exactly 2 inches at 100 yards, allowing precise hits on small targets. Slower to acquire because the eye has to find the small dot.
• Circle-dot (65 MOA + 2 MOA) — fastest acquisition. The 65 MOA outer circle catches your peripheral vision and brings the dot to the target. The 2 MOA center dot gives precision. Best of both worlds — but the larger reticle can feel cluttered for precision work.

For an AR-15 or carbine: circle-dot (HS510C, ARO). For a pistol: single dot (HE407C, HE507K).

Part 4: The Two Killer Features — Solar Failsafe and Shake Awake

Holosun's two biggest engineering advantages are features competitors charge significantly more for.

Solar Failsafe

Every modern Holosun has a solar panel built into the top of the housing. If the battery dies and you don't notice, the optic continues to function on solar power in any daylight conditions. This isn't a marketing gimmick — it's a real-world reliability feature that's saved more than one carbine red dot during extended training sessions when the battery quietly expired. The optic just keeps working.

Shake Awake (Auto-On Motion Sensor)

The optic turns itself off after 10 minutes of being motionless and turns itself back on instantly when motion is detected. The result: claimed battery life of 50,000+ hours (5+ years on a single CR2032) in real-world use, since the optic spends most of its life sleeping. Some Aimpoint models do this; most Trijicon and Eotech don't.

Combined, these two features mean a Holosun red dot mounted on your home-defense rifle can sit for years in a safe without anyone touching it, and still be ready to function when you pick it up.
