Engineered specifically for compact and subcompact 9mm pistols, the FTX (Flex Tip eXpanding) bullet solves the single biggest failure mode of older hollow-points: clogging shut after passing through heavy clothing.
The signature polymer Flex Tip is embedded inside the hollow-point cavity. When the bullet encounters denim, leather, or layered fabric, the polymer plug compresses and drives the jacket open from the inside — forcing reliable expansion every time. Nickel-plated cases give you smoother feeding from tight magazines and a visible chamber check at a glance. Low-flash propellant reduces the muzzle flare that would otherwise wreck your dark-adapted vision in a defensive scenario.

Yes — Critical Defense 115gr standard-pressure (not +P) works in any modern 9mm pistol rated for 9mm Luger SAAMI specs. Hornady also offers Critical Defense +P loads if you want higher pressure performance — confirm your pistol is +P-rated first.
Yes — fire at least 50 rounds through your specific pistol before relying on it for carry. Every pistol has slightly different feed geometry, and confirming reliability with your specific gun is non-negotiable for defensive ammo.
Properly stored (cool, dry, no temperature extremes), modern centerfire ammunition stays reliable for decades. For carry, we recommend rotating your magazine every 6-12 months and inspecting for chamber rub or corrosion.
