Picatinny vs M-LOK vs KeyMod
Picatinny (MIL-STD-1913) is the universal mounting rail standard for optics, lasers, and lights on the TOP of the receiver. Every modern AR-15 has a Picatinny rail on the upper receiver.
M-LOK is the modular mounting standard for the SIDES and BOTTOM of the handguard. Magpul-designed, now industry-standard.
KeyMod is the legacy competitor to M-LOK - largely obsolete in 2026. Most new handguards are M-LOK.
QD vs Fixed Mounts
Quick Detach (QD): Lever-actuated mounts let you remove and re-attach the optic in seconds while maintaining zero (within 1-2 MOA). Critical for travel, swapping optics, or rifle disassembly. Brands: ADM, Larue Tactical, Geissele, Reptilia.

Common Mounting Mistakes
- Wrong height for shooter: If you have to crane your neck, the optic is too low.
- Mounting too far forward or back: Eye relief matters. Red dots are forgiving, scopes are not.
- Overtightening: More torque doesn't mean more security. Strip the screws and you've ruined the mount.
- No thread-locker on permanent mounts: Recoil WILL loosen unlocked screws over time.
- Mixing brands: A Larue mount on a no-name receiver may not return to zero.
