Red Dot Footprint Guide: RMR vs RMSc vs Holosun K

The #1 reason pistol optics get returned: the footprint doesn't match the slide cut. Here's how to get it right the first time.

What Is a Footprint?

The footprint is the bolt pattern and recoil-lug layout machined into the bottom of the optic. Your slide (or adapter plate) must carry the SAME pattern. There are three dominant standards in pistol optics — and they are NOT interchangeable without a plate.

Footprint Size class Popular optics using it Typical host
Trijicon RMR Full size RMR, RMR HD, Holosun 507C/508T, Meprolight MPO-F Glock 17/19 MOS, P320, duty pistols, AR/AK mounts
Shield RMSc Micro/compact Shield RMSc, Holosun 507K/407K, Meprolight MPO-S/DS, SIG RomeoZero Glock 43X/48 MOS, P365, Hellcat, slim carry guns
DeltaPoint Pro Full size Leupold DPP, Holosun EPS (via plate) M&P CORE, some factory cuts

FAQ

My Glock is "MOS" — what does that mean for footprints?

MOS slides ship with a removable cover plate and a set of adapter plates. Full-size MOS (17/19/45) adapts to RMR and most full-size footprints. The slim 43X/48 MOS cut is RMSc-pattern — 507K/RMSc-class optics mount direct; anything else needs a plate like the C&H above.

Open emitter or enclosed?

Open (RMR, 507C) is lighter and lower. Enclosed (EPS, MPO PRO series) seals the emitter from rain, lint, and holster debris — the direction the carry world is moving. For a dedicated carry gun we lean enclosed; for range/competition either is fine.

What dot size should I get?

3-3.5 MOA is the all-around answer. Circle-dot reticles (33 MOA ring + 3 MOA dot, like the MPO PRO) give speed up close and precision at distance — best of both for carry.
