Plate Carrier Buyer's Guide: Sizing, Fit, and Setup
A carrier is sized to the PLATE, not to your T-shirt size. Get that one rule right and everything else falls into place.
Sizing: Plate First, Body Second
Most armor plates come in SAPI-cut sizes — Medium (roughly 9.5" x 12.5") fits the majority of adults. The plate should cover your heart, lungs, and major vessels: top edge at the jugular notch (the dip at the base of your throat), sides just inside the nipples. The carrier is then chosen to hold that plate size; shoulder and cummerbund adjustment handles your body. A properly worn carrier rides HIGH — the most common civilian mistake is wearing it like a low-slung vest, leaving the heart exposed.

FAQ
Do these carriers come with armor plates?
No — carriers ship without plates. Plates are sold separately and, in a few states, ballistic armor purchases carry legal restrictions. Check your state's law before buying plates.
How tight should the cummerbund be?
Snug enough that the carrier doesn't bounce when you jog, loose enough for a full breath. Two-finger rule: you should be able to slide two fingers between cummerbund and torso.
What goes on the carrier first?
Start minimal: 2-3 rifle mags front, IFAK (medical) where your support hand can reach it, and stop. Weight creeps fast — every pound on the carrier is a pound on your shoulders all day. Add only what you actually train with.
