EDC and How to Do It
Building an Everyday Carry you'll actually use — by Itamar Taktuk, founder of TakTactical.
In the world of gear enthusiasts, law enforcement officers, military personnel, and everyday citizens, there is an important concept known as Everyday Carry (EDC). EDC refers to the items a person carries with them every day as part of their normal routine.
Two Philosophies of Everyday Carry
For some, this consists of essentials such as a self-defense firearm, a flashlight, a knife, a wallet, AirPods, and sunglasses. Others take a different approach, believing an EDC should prepare them for a wide range of emergencies. Their carry may include a multitool, first aid supplies, rope, flashlights, tactical pens, notebooks, and other survival-oriented gear.
Everyone has their own philosophy about what is worth carrying, but I believe the key is finding the right balance between preparedness and practicality. Your EDC should meet your personal needs while remaining comfortable enough to carry every single day.

The Practicality Test
The reason is simple: if your everyday carry becomes unrealistic — such as trying to carry a full 100-piece first aid kit — you'll eventually need a bag to hold it all. Once your gear becomes cumbersome, you're far less likely to carry it consistently. An EDC that stays at home because it's inconvenient serves little purpose.
In my opinion, the best everyday carry is one that you can realistically and comfortably carry without hassle. Your setup should be tailored to your lifestyle, your environment, and your preferences, but consistency is what matters most. The gear you have with you is always more useful than the gear you left at home.
My Personal EDC
Personally, I never leave the house without my Glock 19, my knife, and my tourniquet. After all, as the saying goes, "No knife, no life." I take the security of my family to the highest level possible, which means always leaving the house with the means to protect them no matter the situation.
At the end of the day, do what is best for you and your situation, and where it is manageable long term.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most important piece of EDC gear?
Whatever you'll actually carry every day. A capable folding knife and a compact flashlight are the two items most experienced EDCers agree on — both are legal in the widest range of jurisdictions and cover the widest range of use cases.
How do I choose an EDC knife?
Start with your local blade-length laws. Match blade length to what's legal to carry where you live and work. Then decide fixed vs. folding — folders disappear in a pocket, fixed blades are faster to deploy and easier to maintain. Buy from a proven brand and match steel to your use case.
Do I need a tourniquet in my EDC?
A tourniquet is one of the most impactful pieces of trauma gear you can carry — small, light, and life-saving if you or someone near you suffers a major bleed. Get proper training on how to apply it before you carry it.
What belt should I use for concealed carry?
A dedicated CCW belt has a rigid core that stops your holster from sagging under weight. See our EDC Belts collection for options like Nexbelt Titan Ripstop that pull double-duty as everyday wear and holster support.
