Holsters 101: IWB vs. OWB, Retention & How to Choose
The holster matters as much as the gun. A good one keeps your firearm secure, covers the trigger, and stays comfortable enough that you actually wear it all day. A bad one ends up in a drawer. Whether you are carrying concealed for the first time or upgrading from a bargain holster, here is what actually matters.
IWB vs. OWB — where it rides
IWB (Inside the Waistband)
The holster sits inside your pants, clipped to your belt, so only the grip rides above the waistline. This is the go-to for concealed carry because a shirt easily covers it. Carry positions are described like a clock: around 3 to 5 o'clock for strong-side hip, or appendix (AIWB) around 1 o'clock. Slightly less comfortable than OWB, but far easier to hide.
OWB (Outside the Waistband)
The holster rides outside your pants on the belt. It is the most comfortable and the fastest to draw, which makes it ideal for range days, open carry where legal, and concealment under a jacket or untucked shirt. It prints more easily under a thin t-shirt, so layering helps.
The terms you'll see
Retention
How firmly the holster holds the gun. Passive retention uses friction and an audible "click" when holstered; you can usually adjust it with a screw. Active retention adds a thumb release or hood for duty use. For everyday carry, solid passive retention is the standard — the gun should stay put if you bend or jump, but draw cleanly when you want it.
Cant
The angle the gun sits at. A neutral (0°) cant is straight up and down; an FBI cant (about 15° forward) helps conceal the grip and speeds a hip draw. Appendix carry usually runs neutral. Many holsters let you adjust cant.
Ride height & clips
Ride height is how high or low the gun sits relative to the belt. Quality clips or loops keep the holster anchored so it does not shift or come out with the gun. Match the clip to your belt width.
Kydex vs. leather vs. hybrid
- Kydex: molded polymer. Holds its shape, fast consistent draw, audible retention click, easy to clean. The modern default.
- Leather: classic, comfortable against the body, quiet. Needs break-in and can soften over time.
- Hybrid: a Kydex shell on a leather or padded backer — comfort against the skin with a rigid gun pocket.
Fit is gun-specific. A holster is molded for an exact make and model (and sometimes for a light or optic). Always match the holster to your exact pistol — and tell us if you run a red dot or weapon light so the cut clears it.
Don't forget the belt
A holster is only as stable as the belt under it. A proper gun belt is stiffer than a dress belt and keeps the firearm from sagging or rolling away from your body. If you carry every day, a real carry belt is one of the best upgrades you can make.
