How to Sight In Your Red Dot in 5 Steps (25-Yard Zero Method)
Zeroing a red dot doesn't need to take 50 rounds. With the right method, you can get on paper in 3 rounds and dial in to a sub-MOA group in 12 rounds total. Here's the exact process used by competitive shooters and military instructors.
Before You Start
You need:
- Bench or stable shooting rest
- Target with 1-inch grid (Hoffner's, NRA B-8, or printable AR-15 target)
- ~20 rounds of the AMMO YOU WILL CARRY/USE
- Adjustment tool for your specific optic (Aimpoint T10 torx, Holosun flathead, etc.)
- Eye protection and hearing protection
Choose Your Zero Distance
- 25 Yards - Most popular. Works well at 25, 50, and 200 yards due to 5.56 trajectory.
- 50 Yards - Improved Battle Sight Zero - better for 50-300 yards.
- 100 Yards - Best precision at distance, requires more drop compensation up close.
For most users: 50-yard zero is the sweet spot for AR-15 in 5.56. Bullet impact is within 2 inches of point of aim from 0-200 yards.
The 5 Steps
Step 1: Bore Sight (saves 5-10 rounds)
Remove the bolt carrier from your AR-15. Place rifle on bench, secured. Look down the bore at a target 25 yards away - adjust until the bore centers on the bullseye. Then, WITHOUT MOVING THE RIFLE, adjust your red dot until it also centers on the bullseye. Replace bolt carrier.
Step 2: Fire a 3-Round Group at 25 Yards
Aim center mass of target, fire 3 rounds slowly with consistent grip and breathing. The grouping reveals where your rifle is hitting (the actual point of impact). Don't try to correct with each shot - fire all 3 first.
Step 3: Measure the Offset
The center of your 3-round group is your actual POI (point of impact). Measure: how many inches LEFT/RIGHT and UP/DOWN is it from where you aimed?
Step 4: Apply Adjustments
Red dots are usually adjusted in MOA (Minutes of Angle). At 25 yards, 1 MOA ~ 1/4 inch. At 50 yards, 1 MOA ~ 1/2 inch. Most red dots adjust in 1/2 or 1 MOA per click.
Example: Group is 2 inches LOW and 1 inch RIGHT at 25 yards.
- 2 inch low / 0.25 per MOA = 8 MOA UP adjustment
- 1 inch right / 0.25 per MOA = 4 MOA LEFT adjustment
Step 5: Confirm with 3-Round Verification Group
Fire another 3-round group at the same target. Check if the group is now centered on the bullseye. If yes - you're zeroed. If still off by more than 1 MOA, make a smaller adjustment and re-verify. Most rifles zero in 9-12 rounds total.
Common Mistakes
- Chasing the last shot: Adjusting after every round. Fire groups, not single shots.
- Not using a rest: If you can't rule out shooter error, you can't zero the optic.
- Mixing ammo: Cheap brass 55gr will hit differently from 77gr OTM.
- Skipping bore sight: You'll burn 20 rounds just trying to get on paper.
- Loose mount screws: Verify torque before you zero.
